The event kicked off with RaymondCheruiyot, Acting CEO of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya, emphasizing the power of collaboration in the travel-tech space. According to Cheruiyot, tech enables connection and teamwork across geographies, making it easier to innovate and grow without physical limitations.



Cheruiyot highlighted how feedback loops are essential for improving travel platforms. “Feedback breeds collaboration, and collaboration, in turn, breeds growth,” he said. Whether it’s between tour operators, hoteliers, or tech providers, the exchange of ideas and insights can fuel innovation and improve service delivery.


However, it’s not just about convenience—tech also helps manage costs. Cheruiyot emphasized that by adopting digital tools, travel businesses can reduce the overheads associated with traditional operations, such as travel expenses for meetings or administrative costs. Collaboration through technology becomes both an efficient and cost-effective strategy for businesses looking to scale.



Sustainability and Tech: A balanced approach.

Sustainability has become a central concern for the travel industry, and Deepak Meena, CEO of Flyzy, shed light on how technology can play a pivotal role in creating a greener planet. Meena emphasized the need for a sustainable approach to sustainability—one that balances environmental responsibility with business growth.


He outlined a strategy that integrates sustainability, technology, and business. According to Meena, the key is finding ways to leverage tech solutions to reduce carbon footprints while maintaining operational efficiency. However, adopting sustainability-focused technologies can be expensive and complex, especially for smaller operators.


Meena was optimistic, stressing that these challenges can be overcome by collaboration and knowledge sharing. Larger players can help smaller businesses by sharing best practices and offering access to sustainable tech solutions. Sustainability is not just a trend; it’s a necessity, and tech can help businesses grow while reducing their environmental impact.


AI & Data Analytics: Transforming the Guest Experience

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics are no longer futuristic concepts—they’re becoming key tools in the travel industry, especially in enhancing guest experiences. Amanda Owen, Director of Africa and the Indian Ocean at Expedia Group, explained how AI is transforming guest interactions, offering personalized experiences at scale.


From AI-powered chatbots to predictive analytics, technology is allowing businesses to meet customer needs faster and more accurately. This not only improves guest satisfaction but also enhances operational efficiency. By automating tasks like check-ins and bookings, travel businesses can free up staff to focus on delivering high-quality services.


In a panel discussion, it was noted that data analytics helps businesses understand traveler behaviour. By analysing customer preferences and trends, travel companies can make data-driven decisions that improve the guest experience and drive business growth. AI and data are enhancing, not replacing, human touchpoints in the travel industry.


Tech as a partner, Not a Replacement

Sumit Dodhia, CEO of Sumo Trips, emphasized that technology enhances relationships rather than replacing them. By automating routine tasks, tech allows businesses to focus on building and maintaining key relationships with clients and partners.


Dodhia highlighted how tech reduces administrative burdens and streamlines communication, ensuring that partners and customers are always on the same page. Through data integration, businesses can capture valuable insights on partnerships and customer interactions, which can inform strategic decisions. Ultimately, tech should be seen as a partner in driving growth, not as a replacement for the personal connections that are at the heart of successful travel businesses.


Challenges in Digital Adoption

Adopting digital tools can be daunting, especially in an industry steeped in tradition. Wendy Lorenze, Kenya Country Manager for BooknBook Africa, mentioned that many hoteliers face resistance to change and digital illiteracy. For businesses with long-standing operational methods, adopting new tech solutions can feel overwhelming.


Rita Njeri, Director of Product and Solutions at Mastercard, stressed that while tech can help businesses grow, it’s crucial to retain their authenticity. “Tech helps your business grow, but tradition keeps it grounded,” she said. Travel businesses must find the balance between embracing digital transformation and staying true to their unique values and customer experience.


Leveraging Data for Tourism Development.

Data analytics is essential for understanding traveler behaviour and predicting industry trends. Kennedy Uduny, our Head of Marketing at Sopago, emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in data sharing. By working together, governments and private businesses can pool their resources to generate more accurate data on tourism patterns.


Deepak Meena highlighted that data-driven insights can help businesses make informed decisions, such as targeting the right audience or designing customized experiences. But it’s not just about collecting data; interpreting it correctly is key to leveraging it effectively.


Innovative Payment Solutions in African Travel

Mobile payments and e-commerce are transforming the way transactions are made in Africa’s travel industry. Peter Wachira, CEO of Triply, explained how mobile payment systems like M-Pesa are enabling seamless, secure transactions for travelers across the continent.


However, Wachira also raised concerns about cybersecurity threats. As digital payments grow, so do the risks. Businesses need to adopt robust security measures to protect both themselves and their customers. Edwin Ruzive, General Manager at Gatestream, added that partnering with local payment providers that have the right tech stack for API integration is essential for a smooth payment process.


GenAI and the Future of Travel

The summit ended with a powerful presentation by Jacques Khisa, CEO of Voyage Companion, on the role of Generative AI (GenAI) in reshaping the travel industry. From customizable itineraries to virtual customer service agents, GenAI is set to revolutionize the way businesses interact with travellers. Khisa reminded attendees that even if their businesses are small, the industry is not small. By leveraging emerging technologies like GenAI, African travel companies can offer tailored services, improve operations, and stay competitive in the global market. His advice was clear: to scale up, you need to skill up.
